Dozens injured following peaceful demonstration in occupied El Aaiun

El Aaiun (occupied territories), June 16, 2014 (SPS) - Dozen Saharawis were injured Sunday by the Moroccan repression forces, following a peaceful demonstration they held to call for a human rights mechanism within the MINURSO mandate in the occupied city of El Aaiun, capital of Western Sahara.


The Saharawi demonstrators demanded that a human rights mechanism be included to the prerogatives of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), calling for the release of all Saharawi political prisoners.


According to a Saharawi right source, the demonstrators were pelted with stones, beaten with sticks and batons, kicked, slapped and verbally assaulted by the Moroccan forces of repression.


This violent intervention by Moroccan security forces has left injuries of varying severity among the Saharawi demonstrators.
