Brussels, October 4, 2014 (SPS) – The European Union (EU) "closely follows" the developments in Western Sahara after the death of Sahrawi human rights defender and political prisoner Hassana Elouali.

In a letter of Bernard Savage, speaking on behalf of the European diplomacy chief Catherine Ashton, in response to the letter of Mohamed Sidati, Sahrawi Minister and Polisario Front representative in Europe, about Hassana Elouali’s death, EU offers condolences to the family of the deceased and the Sahrawi people.

In this regard, he recalled that the EU closely followed the developments in Western Sahara and expressed on several occasions, its concern about this protracted conflict which has "an impact on the compliance with human rights and cooperation in the region."

The Polisario Front on Tuesday had requested of the EU to react to stop the extortions of the Moroccan authorities in the occupied Western Sahara and human rights abuse against the Sahrawi prisoners.

Sahrawi human rights defender and political prisoner, Hassana Elouali died Saturday evening in the occupied city of Dakhla. His death is "the result of years of neglect and torture," Polisario Front said. (SPS)
