Portuguese MDM expresses support for Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination

Submitted on

Lisbon, October 6, 2014 (SPS) - The Portuguese Democratic Women’s Movement (MDM) has expressed its support for the fight and resistance of the families, women and Sahrawi people for the right of self-determination and a sovereign, independent and free country.

In a statement in the wake of the death in prison of Sahrawi human rights activist Hasena Elwali, MDM expressed its solidarity towards the family of the deceased and condemned the arbitrariness and criminal acts carried out by the Moroccan forces which continue to deny and disrespect International Law and United Nations’ resolutions regarding the right to self-determination of the Sahrawi people.

MDM further demanded the Moroccan State to release all Sahrawi political prisoners and condemned the cruel repression, detention, tortures and murders which are committed by the Moroccan authorities in the occupied territories, in a blatant violation of human rights set out in the Universal Declaration.

MDM urged the United Nations to comply with its own resolutions which recognise the people’s right to resist occupation and decide its own future.

Lastly, MDM called the Portuguese State to abide by the Constitution of the Portuguese State which recognises the rights of the colonised people to self-determination and independence and with International Law in compliance with the rights of the Sahrawi people, already recognised by the UN.
