New York, Oct 9, 2014 (SPS) - Permanent Ambassador of Uruguay to the UN, Gonzalo Koncke, said Tuesday, before the UN Fourth Committee, it is crucial to resume conversation between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front, calling for respect of the right of self-determination of the people of Western Sahara.

The Uruguayan diplomat went on saying that it is crucial right now that conversation between Morocco and the Polisario Front “be resumed promptly, in good faith and with a view to achieving a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution to this conflict, providing for self-determination of the people of Western Sahara in accordance with the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations and the Resolution 1514 and other relevant resolutions of the General Assembly and the Security Council.”

Konche said that his country supports the efforts being undertaken by the Secretary-general and his Personal Envoy, Christopher Ross, to encourage the parties to the conflict to move forward in resolving this conflict.

He called on both parties to cooperate with the UN to identify and implement measures to ensure full respect for human rights in Western Sahara.

The Ambassador, on other hand, said that Uruguay hopes this Fourth Committee debate would constitutes a space to reaffirm the collective commitment to eradicate colonialism in all its forms, in line with the UN General Assembly Resolution on the Third International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism (2011-2020).
