New York (United Nations), October 10, 2014 (SPS) – President of the Algerian Foundation for Strategic and Security Studies (FAESS), Mhand Berkouk, called in his speech Tuesday before the UN Fourth Committee, Special Political and Decolonization, for enabling the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) to organize self-determination referendum of the Sahrawi people.

“The United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) should be enabled to organize a referendum for self-determination and equipped with a legal instrument to monitor human rights violations,” said Mr. Berkouk.

He also called the Security Council to adopt a resolution pressing Morocco to be more proactive in negotiations with the Frente Polisario.

“Morocco had unlawfully occupied Western Sahara for 39 years, no international organization recognized its sovereignty,” he underlined. (SPS)
