New York, Oct 14, 2014 (SPS) - The UN Member States unanimously reaffirmed the right of the people of Western Sahara to self-determination and their responsibility vis-à-vis the Saharawi people and the decolonization of its territory, illegally occupied by Morocco, said Tuesday in New York Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Salek.
“The 193 UN member states, represented in the Fourth Commission of the General Assembly for decolonization, just unanimously reaffirmed the right of the people of Western Sahara to self-determination and responsibility of the United Nations vis-à-vis our people and the decolonization of its territory, illegally occupied by Morocco,” Ould-Salek said in a press statement.
He said that the resolution adopted by the UN is “a categorical rejection to procrastination and maneuverings of the Moroccan occupation to impose a fait accompli to the international community.”
“This resolution is also a strong support to the commendable efforts of the UN and the African Union which continue to deploy to accelerate the decolonization of Western Sahara,” added head of Saharawi diplomacy.
Representatives of world civil societies, who took the floor at the UN Fourth Committee, said FM, emphasized that the exercise by the Saharawi people of their full rights to freedom and sovereignty remains the “only way toward achieving peace, stability and reconciliation in North Africa.
The Minister also took this opportunity to send, on behalf of the Polisario Front and Saharawi Government, an urgent appeal to the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy, Christopher Ross, to speed up the pace of negotiation between the parties, so to ensure that the inalienable right of the Saharawi people to self-determination and independence is met.
He, on other hand, urged Moroccan Government to associate itself with the supreme interests of people of the region, stop going against the tide of history and put an end its atrocities carried out on the Saharawi people. (SPS)
