New York, Oct 16, 2014 (SPS) - The 193 Members States of the General Assembly of the UN on Thursday elected Angola, Malaysia, New Zealand, Spain and Venezuela to serve as non-permanent members on the Security Council for two-year terms beginning on 1 January 2015.
The five countries will join the 5 permanent members, US, Russia, France, China and UK and the 5 other non-permanent members, Chad, Chile, Jordan, Lithuania and Nigeria.
They will replace Argentina, Australia, Luxembourg, South Korea and Rwanda.
According to observers, the election of Angola and Venezuela to the a council already joined by others countries like Nigeria and Chad could have a key role in future votes within the Security Council in favor of the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination.
The Security Council of the UN will consider the question of Western Sahara next April in the light of the report to be submitted by the Secretary General regarding the peace process in Western Sahara.
Registered since 1963 on the list of Non-Self-Governing Territories, thus eligible for the application of Resolution 1514 of the UN General Assembly containing a Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, Western Sahara is Africa’s last colony which has been occupied since 1975 by Morocco with the support of France.
