Addis Ababa, Feb 3, 2015 (SPS) - The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Mohamed Salem Ould Salek, has praised the decisions and the declaration adopted by African Heads of State and Government at the end of their 24th Summit, held in Addis Ababa on 30-31 January 2015.

In statements to SPS, Minister Ould Salek underlined that the Summit affirmed the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination, and voiced concern over the continued Moroccan occupation of the Saharawi Republic, a founding member of the African Union (AU).

Demanding a speedy referendum on self-determination for the Saharawi people, the declaration urged AU member states and African civil society organizations to cancel the meeting planned by Morocco in the occupied city of Dakhla (Western Sahara) in collaboration with the Swiss International Organization “Crans Montana”, as it is a grave violation of the international law and the efforts being made by the AU and international community vis-à-vis the decolonization of Western Sahara, said the minister.

“The decisions adopted by African heads of state and foreign ministers will undoubtedly make Morocco far more isolated at the African and international level,” Ould Salek responded to the decisions taken by the Summit.

Assembly of the African Union further requested the AU Commission and its special envoy for Western Sahara to collaborate and coordinate with the UN so to end colonialism in Western Sahara, he added. (SPS)
