Frente Polisario calls for immediate action to protect Saharawi civilians

Bir Lehlou (liberated zones), Feb 11, 2015 (SPS) - The Polisario Front has urgently called for an immediate action to ensure protection for the Saharawi civilians, asking that MINURSO be empowered with a mechanism to monitor human rights in the occupied part of Western Sahara.

“We reiterate our urgent call for immediate intervention to ensure the necessary protection for innocent Saharawi civilians in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, which is under the direct responsibility of the United Nations, by empowering the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) to monitor and report about human rights in the territory,” stated the President of the Republic and Secretary General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Mohamed Abdleaziz, in a letter addressed Wednesday to the UN Secretary General following the assassination of the young Saharawi boy, Mohamed Lamin Haidala, by five Moroccan settlers.

President Mohamed Abdelazi went on saying that such barbaric practices are only an obvious translation to Morocco’s official discourse and its chauvinistic policy meant to incite Moroccan settlers against Saharawi citizens, in the aim to spread fear and panic and deter the Saharawis from claiming their legitimate rights to self-determination.

“This incident is a sign of a dangerous trend by Moroccan occupying authorities towards the creation of an atmosphere of convulsion, instability and loss of confidence, especially as your Personal Envoy prepares to visit the region in a new endeavour to find a settlement bringing peace and security to the territory and the region as a whole,” added Mohamed Abdelaziz.

To note, the young Saharawi boy took his last breath on January 8th, 2015 in Agadir hospital, due to severe injuries resulted from a heinous assault by Moroccan settlers, in a debunked collusion with Moroccan security forces. (SPS)
