President of Republic asks UN to probe the assassination of Saharawi citizen

Submitted on

Bir Lehlou (liberated zones), Feb 24, 2015 (SPS) - The President of the Republic, Secretary General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz, has deplored the move by Moroccan occupying state to bury the young Saharawi boy, Mohamed Lamin Ould Haidala, in the absence of his family, urging the UN to open “an independent investigation” into the circumstances surrounding his death.

In a letter addressed to the UN Chief Ban Ki-moon, President Mohamed Abdelaziz called on the UN to immediately act so to reveal the circumstances surrounding his death, adding that such move aims to hide Morocco’s crimes against the Saharawi people.

These painful and repeated practices and scenes, stated the letter, are carried out by an illegal occupying power against defenseless citizens over a territory still under UN responsibility, in spite of the presence of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).

The letter went on saying that such crime is only a chapter in the Moroccan occupying state record which is replete with gross violations of human rights, emphasizing the pressing need to expedite the decolonization process in Western Sahara, by allowing the Saharawi people to exercise their right to self-determination and independence, through a free, fair and impartial referendum.
