NGO calls for release of Saharawi political prisoner Mohamed Yahya Elhafed

Submitted on

Ait Melloul (Morocco), March 1, 2015 (SPS) The Saharawi Collective of Human Rights Defenders (CODESA) called the Moroccan authorities to immediately  release the Saharawi political prisoner, Yahya Mohamed Hafed Iaaza, and all Sahrawi defenders of human rights languishing in Moroccan prisons.

The call comes after the Saharawi political prisoner, serving a term of 15 years imprisonment since his arrest in 2008 for his participation in events celebrating the anniversary of SADR, enters the seventh year, indicated a CODESA statement.

The CODESA estimated that his trial took place in total absence of rules and conditions of a fair trial.

Since his arrest, he suffered torture, ill-treatment and isolation in different Moroccan prisons and led unlimited hunger strikes ranging from 40 to 60 days without meeting his legitimate demands, recalled the source.

The Executive bureau of the CODESA denounced the arrest, describing it as systematic policy of revenge against the human rights defender Yahya Mohamed Hafed Iaaza and called on the Moroccan authorities to ensure his right to medical treatment, family visits and contacts with the outside world.
