SNHRC asks the world to assume responsibility vis-à-vis Moroccan abuses in Western Sahara

Submitted on

Chahid Al Hafed (refugee camps), April 21, 2015 (SPS) - The Saharawi National Human Rights Commission (SNHRC) has called upon the UN, AU and EU as well as all international human rights organizations and mechanisms to shoulder responsibility vis-à-vis the flagrant violations of human rights being committed by Moroccan repressive forces against innocent Saharawi citizens.

In a statement obtained by SPS ahead of UN Security Council’s meeting on Western Sahara, the Commission asked the international community to respect the international law in Western Sahara by enabling the Saharawi people to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.

SNHRC urged the United Nations (UN) and international organizations to exert pressure on the Kingdom of Morocco so to protect human rights of the Saharawi people.

It also highlighted that Morocco continues to place restrictions on freedoms and the rights to protest of the Saharawis, adding this “contradicts the fundamental freedoms enshrined in international laws.” (SPS)
