Vienna, April 30, 2015 (SPS) - Austria’s Parliament has called on its government to make efforts, within the framework of the European Union (EU), to extend UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) prerogatives to the monitoring of human rights situation in Western Sahara.
In a resolution adopted recently, Austria’s National Council (lower house of Parliament) also invited its government to “continue to work within the EU and the United Nations for a full implementation of Security Council resolutions and to support Saharawi people's right to self-determination.”
Austrian government is urged to “undertake actions so that the EU and the UN come down against Morocco, and define MINURSO’s prerogatives allowing the UN mission to get in touch with civil society organizations (CSOs) in Western Sahara.”
Austria’s Parliament also called on its government to intervene “for the special rapporteurs of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to be allowed getting into (the occupied Saharawi territories) and monitor the situation of human rights.”
The government of Austria has been invited to “make proposals to the parties to the conflict (Morocco and the Polisario Front) to held mediation meetings in Austria, so that negotiations may resume.” (SPS)
