Abidjan, July 15, 2015 (SPS) - The Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) on Wednesday expressed attachment to the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG).
Speaking during the meeting of the African Experts’ Committee on Democracy and Governance underway in Abidjan (Ivory Coast), Saharawi delegate Mr. Hadi Kentawi renewed SADR’s adherence to the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG).
Mr. Hadi seized the opportunity to urge African states to play a bigger role in ending the suffering of the Saharawi people, by allowing them to enjoy the right to self-determination, enshrined in all international conventions.
“We cannot talk about democracy, governance, the right to education, health, communication, political participation and equality as a set of rights to be enjoyed by every African unless the Saharawi people are free,” stated the Saharawi delegate.
He also presented the 40-year experience of Saharawi people in combining the liberation battle and the building of national institutions within the confine of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, mentioning the tireless efforts by SADR to improve the democratic experience in the Saharawi society.
The meeting addressed the condition of civil society, freedom of the press and parliament’s role in consecrating democracy and equality. (SPS)
