Zimbabwe for organization of Western Sahara referendum as soon as possible

Harare, July 28, 2015 (SPS) - The Director for Africa, Asia and the Pacific at Zimbabwe Foreign Affairs Ministry, Mr. Jonathan Wutawunashe, called Monday for the need to organize the referendum on self-determination for the Saharawi people as soon as possible.


In a meeting with Saharawi Ambassador Deich Mohamed Saleh at FM headquarters, Mr. Wutawunashe reiterated his country’s commitment, under leadership of President Mugabe, to unconditionally support the legitimate struggle by the Saharawi Republic (SADR) to liberate its national territory, occupied by the Kingdom of Morocco.


Being the current chair of the African Union (AU), he added that Zimbabwe remains concerned for the international community’s failure to put an end to the suffering of this African country.


With regard to the international efforts to expedite the decolonization of Western Sahara, the Zimbabwean official called for the urgent need to unite efforts so to set a date for the organization of the referendum in Western Sahara as soon as possible in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations and African Union.


The Saharawi diplomat, for his part, updated his interlocutor on the latest developments on the question of Western Sahara. (SPS)
