9-June School (Refugee Camps), 30 Nov 2015 (SPS)- The President of the Sahrawi National Assembly (ANS) Khatri Addouh said that the United Nations’ “encouraging” position concerning the Western Sahara conflict “must be supported by the Security Council” for a peaceful settlement of this issue.
In a statement to APS on the sidelines of the festivities celebrating the 40th anniversary of creation of the ANS, Addouh underlined the recent declarations of the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon and the President of the Security Council, Matthew Rycroft, who expressed their support to the efforts of the UN envoy to Western Sahara.
The President of the Security Council expressed, on Wednesday, his support to Ross’ mission, hoping that the authorities of the countries in the region will extend their cooperation, while Ban Ki-moon called to relaunch the negotiations process between parties to the conflict.
Addouh denounced “the Moroccan hindrances to UN efforts for a peaceful solution to the Sahrawi conflict by rejecting new negotiations and the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.”
“Morocco rejects the approaches of the UN envoy to the region and hinders the relaunch of the process of peaceful settlement of the Sahrawi conflict through the organization of a self-determination referendum as a democratic mechanism allowing the Sahrawi people to decide their fate,” he undermined.
