Swiss Support Committees launch petition to call for self-determination referendum in Western Sahara

Geneva, January 4, 2016 (SPS) - The Swiss Support Committees for the Saharawi have launched a Petition to the UN Security Council to require the immediate organization of a referendum on self-determination in Western Sahara.

 

The petition, from 1 January to 15 August 2016, called for worldwide support for this petition. The petition stressed that it’s time to find a solution to the conflict in Western Sahara,” adding that the Saharawi must at last be able to exercise their right to self-determination.

 

“The signatories call upon the UN Security Council to organize a Referendum for self-determination among the Saharawi population, in fulfilment of the 1991 roadmap for peace. The Saharawi people are entitled to self-determination, as foreseen by the Charta of the United Nations,” said the text of the petition.

 

The Petition with all the collected signatures will be handed over to the UN Security Council in Geneva and New York prior to the meeting of the Committee on Decolonization. (SPS)
