Decision of European Court of Justice: Strong message that struggle of Sahrawi people is supported by international law

Shaheed El-Hafed (Refugee Camps), 04 October 2024 (SPS) - The President of the Sahrawi National Council, Hamma Salama, affirmed that the rulings issued by the European Court of Justice on Friday regarding the plundering of Western Sahara’s resources represent a strong message that the just struggle of the Sahrawi people enjoys the support of international law.

In a press statement to the Sahrawi News Agency (SPS), the President of the Sahrawi National Council highlighted that the decision is considered a "great victory" for the Sahrawi people, justice, and international law. He stated that it is "clear that the approval of the Polisario Front as the sole representative of the Sahrawi people is a prerequisite for any agreements."

He pointed out that this decision "aligns with the resolutions of the United Nations and the African Union, considering the Polisario Front as the legitimate and only representative of the Sahrawi people, which is the entity capable of advocating for their natural right to freedom and independence."

Hamma Salama emphasized that the European Court's ruling, which coincides with the visits of the UN Secretary-General's personal envoy to the region and in anticipation of discussions by the UN Security Council regarding Western Sahara, "is a powerful message that the just struggle of the Sahrawi people continues to be supported by international law and international court decisions, which also constitutes a strong blow to Moroccan occupation and its allies."

The European Court of Justice has confirmed, in historic rulings issued by its Supreme Chamber, the illegitimacy of the agreements between the European Union and Morocco that were concluded in violation of the Sahrawi people’s right to consent and their permanent sovereignty over their natural resources. The court also definitively rejected appeals from the European Council and the European Commission.
