CNASPS condemns France’s backing of Morocco’s Western Sahara autonomy plan

Algiers, 29 July 2024 (SPS) -  The Algerian National Committee for Solidarity with the Sahrawi People (CNASPS) voiced its outrage on Monday regarding France’s “shameful” backing of the so-called Moroccan autonomy plan for Western Sahara, denouncing a “serious violation” of international law.

“The members of the Algerian National Committee for Solidarity with the Sahrawi People (CNASPS) learned with indignation of the French decision that officially backs Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara,” CNASPS said in a statement.

CNASPS added, “This announcement confirms France’s shameful and almost covert backing of Morocco’s colonization of Western Sahara.”

The statement pointed out that they are “two political regimes, one driven by a permanent and anachronistic colonialist mindset, and the other built on an ahistorical expansionist fantasy.”

The CNASPS noted that “France, given its responsibilities as a permanent member of the Security Council to uphold international law, has severely undermined the international law by making this unjust decision. The latter blatantly disregards international law, which unequivocally guarantees the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.”

“By these same responsibilities as a Security Council member, and rather than working to resolve international conflicts under a legal and doctrinal framework codified by consensus, France has taken this official one-sided stance. This decision fuels the armed conflict in Western Sahara, seriously threatening the region’s stability and security,” the statement noted.
