The UK Parliamentary Group in Solidarity with the Sahrawi People demands the release of Sahrawi prisoners in Moroccan prisons

London (United Kingdom), January 18, 2024 (SPS) - The Chairman of the UK Parliamentary Group for Solidarity with the Sahrawi People, Mr. Ben Lake, called on his country’s government to continue to pressure the Moroccan government to release Sahrawi political prisoners in Moroccan prisons.

This came in a written response to a question addressed to the British Foreign Secretary, where Mr. David Routley, Assistant Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Cooperation, confirmed that the British government is committed to protecting human rights in all parts of the world, including in Morocco and Western Sahara, and that it raises the issue of human rights in all bilateral meetings with the Moroccan government and urges it to respect international law.

The written response also stressed that the United Kingdom government constantly urges all countries, including through the channels of its embassies, to respect international law and international human rights standards and avoid any action that might endanger human life.

The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office added: "We regularly discuss the issue of immigration and the treatment of refugees, as well as other matters."

It should be noted that the Multi-Party Parliamentary Group for Solidarity and Friendship with the Sahrawi People, in addition to other parliamentarians, sent more than forty written questions to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the past year.

The questions included inquiries about security and stability in the region, as well as human rights violations in Western Sahara and the plunder of natural resources, and emphasized on the pivotal role that the Kingdom must play in order to ensure that the Sahrawi people exercise their right to self-determination and pressure on Morocco to comply with the application of international law and legitimacy.
