Polisario Front strongly condemns Moroccan attacks against human rights defenders in the occupied cities

New York (United Nations), October 24, 2023 (SPS) - The member of the National Secretariat and Representative of the Polisario Front at the United Nations and Coordinator with MINURSO, Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, sent a letter yesterday to the Permanent Representative of Brazil to the United Nations and current President of the Security Council, Ambassador Sergio França Danis, in which he expressed the strong condemnation of the Polisario Front for the attack on Sahrawi human rights defenders, as well as the horrific and systematic human rights violations committed by the Moroccan occupying state with complete impunity.

Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar called on, in his letter, the United Nations to activate its legal and moral responsibility towards the Sahrawi people, especially Sahrawi civilians living in the areas under illegal Moroccan occupation, as this responsibility entails the necessity of establishing an independent and permanent mechanism for the United Nations to protect the political, economic, social and cultural rights of the Sahrawi people, including their right to permanent sovereignty over their natural resources, and submitting regular and field reports on the situation in the region to the relevant United Nations bodies.

At a time when the Security Council is scheduled to vote on a new resolution on the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), the Moroccan occupying state continues to violate Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2654 (2022), which called for strengthening the protection of human rights in Western Sahara, including freedom of expression and association.

In this regard, added the letter, “the Polisario Front reaffirms that it will never be possible for any serious and credible peace process to take place as long as the Moroccan occupying state, with complete impunity, continues its terrorist and revenge war in the occupied Western Sahara and its attempts to impose a fait accompli by force in the region are in full view of the United Nations and its mission.
