International community called to hold Morocco accountable for assaulting Saharawi civilians in Guergerat

Submitted on

Rome, 22 November 2020 (SPS) - The Italian Network for Peace and Disarmament urged the international community to hold Morocco accountable for militarily intervening against the Saharawi civilians, warning that any failure to sort out Western Sahara conflict “would lead to more suffering, violence and instability in the Maghreb region.
The Network underlined, in a press release, that the Moroccan kingdom has been blocking peace plan for years, by refusing to organize self-determination referendum for the Saharawi people, as laid down by Security Council Resolution 690 (1991) by which the MINURSO was deployed in the Saharawi territories.
In light of the serious escalation and growing tension alongside the Wall of Shame, the statement called on the Moroccan Kingdom to immediately withdraw its military forces to preserve the truce in place since 1991.
The Italian organization urged EU member states to condemn the military operation conducted by Morocco’s troops against Saharawi civilians in a UN-supervised zone. (SPS)
