Berlin, 30 November 2019 (SPS) - Sahrawi human rights activist Aminatu Haidar called Wednesday, in Berlin, on the German government to address the current situation in occupied Western Sahara, arguing that European countries should not maintain relations with Morocco, an expansionist country known for its constant violations of international law.
Sahrawi activist, Aminatou Haidar, met with the German Federal Government's Commissioner for Human Rights and Humanitarian Aids, Barbel Kofler, to discuss the current situation in occupied Western Sahara.
During the meeting, Haidar addressed in detail the serious scenario in Western Sahara, which she described as “a situation of concern over the constant violations by Morocco in the occupied areas and an uncertain future in the absence of real prospects and progress in the work of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara.”
The Sahrawi activist called on the German Government's members to intervene to change the current situation in occupied Western Sahara and to further support international action to look for a solution that would enable the Sahrawi people exercise their inalienable right to self-determination.
"Germany cannot allow human rights to be violated in the 21st century, imprisoning innocent people, torturing activists for the mere claim of a legitimate right," said Haider.
"European countries must not maintain relations with an expansionist country known for its constant violations of international law," the Sahrawi activist added.
It is also necessary to launch pressure actions to force Morocco to release all Sahrawi political prisoners and to ensure that the Security Council extends MINURSO's mandate in to guarantee the fundamental rights of the Sahrawi people to self-determination. (SPS)
