PODEMOS urges Spanish Government to prevent plundering of Western Sahara natural resources (Press)

Submitted on

Las Palmas (Canary Islands), November 12, 2017 (SPS) - PODEMOS at the Parliament of the Canary Islands has registered a proposition, in which the regional chamber is required to urge the Spanish Government to demonstrate opposition to the European Commission on the claim to renegotiate the trade agreement between the European Union and Morocco, which would legitimize the plundering of the natural resources of Western Sahara.
The proposal coincides with the 42nd anniversary of the evacuation of Western Sahara by the Spanish army and the Moroccan invasion of the territory.
It demands compliance with the judgment on December 21, 2016, of the European Union Court of Justice, which determines that Morocco has no sovereignty over Western Sahara and therefore, prohibits the kingdom of Morocco from trading with products and natural resources from Western Sahara.
The Parliament is also asked to condemn any foreign activity in the Sahrawi territory carried out without the authorization of its administration as it would legitimize the Moroccan occupation and prolong the suffering of the Sahrawi people, while urging the Canarian business associations to avoid marketing of products and natural resources from Western Sahara, as they violate international jurisdiction.
