Bir Lahlou (occupied territories), Jan 31, 2018 (SPS) - The Sahrawi government hailed the decision adopted by the 30th ordinary summit of the African Union held recently in Addis Ababa, which calls on the two member States of the organization, the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, and the kingdom of Morocco, to engage in direct, serious discussions without preconditions, and to take the measures necessary for the organization of a self-determination referendum in Western Sahara in order to put an end to their conflict.
“The historic decision adopted by the African leaders expresses a strong African willingness to achieve the goals and principles of the African Union adopted by Morocco, which is now called to respect them, being the 55th member of this continental organization,” said a communiqué of the Sahrawi Government.
If the African approach “stems from the conviction of the States of the Union that the harmony and coexistence between the SADR and Morocco is possible, even necessary, the African leaders consider that the biggest contribution that Morocco could bring to peace and security in the continent is to put an end to its occupation of the parts of Western Sahara’s territory, and to conform to the internationally recognized borders.”
The Sahrawi government said that it is willing to start negotiations with the Moroccan government to establish peace between the two neighbouring States and members of the African Union based on the principles of the latter and the decisions and resolutions of the relevant international law,” added the statement.
