Algiers, June 22, 2019 (SPS) - During the Holy month of Ramadan, the World Food Prgramme (WFP) distributed 350 tonnes of dates offered by Saudi Arabia to Sahrawi refugees in Algeria, the WFP said in a communiqué published Friday.
“Sahrawi refugees received 2kg of dates for each during the holy month of Ramadan. Saudi Arabia’s donation is worth US$725,000 and this contribution has been regular in the recent years,” said the communiqué.
The delivery ceremony took place at Saudi Arabia’s embassy to Algiers, in the presence of the Saudi Ambassadeur, Abdelaziz Ben Ibrahim Hamad El-Omairini, the Head of Mission of King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSRelief), Mansour Al-Eid and the WFP Representative in Algeria, Romain Sirois.
“(KSRelief) distributes thousands of dates to the whole world each year under the kingdom’s Gift of Dates programme,” said Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, Royal Court Advisor and General Supervisor of the King Salman Humanitarian and Relief Centre.
The KS-WFP humanitarian partnership is crucial. It seeks to fight against hunger and provide emergency food aid,” recalled WFP.
Since 2008, Saudi Arabia contributed more than US$1.5 billion to WFP operations worldwide. (SPS)
