Geneva (Switzerland), June 24, 2021 (SPS) - The former United Nations Representative in Western Sahara, Francesco Bastagli, highlighted during the Virtual Conference held in Geneva on the causes of the failure of the United Nations and the ways to reactivate the peace process in Western Sahara, that "the Security Council assumes much of the blame for the failure to organize the referendum on self-determination in Western Sahara."
Mr. Bastagli noted that “the language of the Security Council has changed from the basic principle and international obligations regarding self-determination, as there have been attempts at manipulation regarding the question of Western Sahara, contrary to what is stipulated in the international law and the Resolutions adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations ”.SPS
