European Parliament’s vote on EU-Morocco agreement: obstacle to political solution in Western Sahara

Submitted on

Algiers- Feb 21, 2019 (SPS) -  Ambassador of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) to Algeria Abdelkader Taleb Omar affirmed, Tuesday in Algiers, that the vote by the European Parliament on the new agreements with Morocco on trade and fishing faces " serious political repercussions in the region and impedes the political solution to Western Sahara’s conflict.
"These agreements are harmful since they coincide with the new dynamic on promising prospects for the progress of the peace process where a second round of direct negotiations is scheduled for next March," the Sahrawi ambassador told the national radio’s channel I.
France and Spain urged the EP to submit to the executive power, ignoring the decisions of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), added the Saharawi diplomat.
“In spite of this, the EP has consciously turned towards the violation of this decision and despite the opposition of some MEPs who called for consultation of the CJEU,”
However, he said that "a force has put pressure to get the law passed, on the pretext that Morocco provides them benefits in terms of security and migration,” which contributes to supporting colonialism in the region at the expense of "peoples’ sovereignty."
According to the Saharawi diplomat, "France financed, armed, trained and cooperated with the Moroccan regime to strengthen its presence in Western Sahara.”SPS
