Paris, February 19, 2022 (SPS) - The French Association of Friends of the Sahrawi Republic sent a letter to the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, as the president of the African-European Summit, reminding him of the important role the two regional organizations should play to implemetn of international law, in favor of the self-determination of the Saharawi people.
The letter said, according to a press release by the association, "Such a summit should allow the initiation of a process of real implementation of the 1990 settlement plan based on the provisions of the Constitutive Act of the African Union relating to the respect of the borders inherited after decolonization".
In the same context, the letter referred to the recent rulings of the European Court of Justice, which explicitly decided to cancel the agreement that includes Western Sahara, given that Morocco does not have the right to sovereignty over Western Sahara because it is a “separate” and “distinct” region from Morocco under international law.
On the other hand, the Association of Friends of the Sahrawi Republic in France welcomed the participation of the President of the Republic, Brahim Ghali, in the work of the 6th African-European Summit, in Brussels, representing the Sahrawi country in its capacity as the 51st member of the African Union.
The statement continued, "This presence honors us as it represents the existence of a Sahrawi state that has built its institutions step by step for the past 46 years in the service of the Saharawi people and their struggle for independence."
It is noteworthy that President Ibrahim Ghali gave two speeches during the work of this summit on the issue of peace and security in the continent, especially in North Africa and the Sahel, where he stressed that EU must be part of solution and not part of the problem in the Western Sahara conflict. He also renewed the Saharawi state's support regarding facilitating access to a vaccine against COVID-19.
