Submitted on

Becici (Montenegro) February 17, 2018 (SPS) - The 33rd Congress of the International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY) on Saturday approved a recommendation on Western Sahara calling on the international community to respect international humanitarian law in Western Sahara.
The recommendation called for respect for international humanitarian law in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, in particular the right to freedom of association, assembly, protest, freedom of movement and expression.
It called for the expansion of the prerogatives of MINURSO to include monitoring and reporting on human rights, and the release of all Sahrawi political detainees in the various Moroccan prisons.
It called also for an end to the illegal looting of natural resources in occupied territories of Western Sahara and to discourage multinational companies, especially European ones, from such activities, stressing the importance of supporting the provision of humanitarian assistance to Saharawi refugees in a sustainable and timely manner.
