Commemoration of 53rd double anniversary of historic Zemla Uprising and National Day of Disappeared Sahrawi

Shaheed Al Hafed, 17 June 2023 (SPS) - The 53rd double anniversary of Zemla Uprising and National Day of the Disappeared Sahrawi, 17 June, was commemorated on Saturday in the wilaya of Shaheed Al Hafed in the Sahrawi refugee camps, in the presence of the President of the Republic, the Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Brahim Ghali, members of the National Secretariat, the government, and state officials.
In his opening speech, wali of Shaheed Al Hafed, Mr. Daf Mohamed-Fadel, recalled the historical symbolism of the event, which was considered the beginning of an approach to resistance and defense of the right of the Sahrawi people for existence.
A documentary was screened about the most important stages that the Sahrawi Vanguard Organization went through since its foundation and the challenges and difficulties it had to face, culminating in the establishment of the Polisario Front on 10 May 1973, the outbreak of armed struggle on May 20, 1973, the proclamation of the Sahrawi Republic on February 27, 1976, the establishment of the first Sahrawi government on March 6, 1976, and since then the gains and victories of the Sahrawi people have continued.
The event witnessed a lecture on the most important developments related to the national cause after the founding of the Saharwi Vanguard Organization and the life of its founder Mohamed Sid-Brahim Basiri, his inception and education, and the beginnings of liberation thought.
The families of the martyrs, the heroes of the uprising, who had a prominent role in consolidating the foundations of the Sahrawi Vanguard Organization and defended with all their might and soul for the expulsion of the Spanish colonizer, were also honored.
