United Nations, April28,2011 (SPS) - The South African ambassador to United Nations, Baso Sangqu, underlined this Wednesday that "the resolution 1979 reaffirms the self-determination of the Saharawi people which is the original and the permanent aim of the Minurso mandate since its formation in 1991".
In declaration to the media, Baso Sangqu, expressed regret about not inserting a mechanism of human rights monitoring into the Minurso mandate, asserting that the resolution adopted by the Security council consider to be a step towards the front in dealing with the conflict of Western Sahara.
"The new resolution is a step to the advance in the right direction comparing with the previous resolutions", said Mr. Sangqu
From its part, Human Rights Watch (HRW) applauded that " the human rights words are not any more a taboo for the French delegation when talking about Western Sahara , stressing the need to a mechanism of monitoring human rights in Western Sahara.
Elsewhere, the organization of Oxfam expressed disappointment that the Minurso is still the only exception among the UN peace mandates, whish is not possessing this mechanism, assuring that the French opposition to that mechanism is a paradox to its proclaimed support for the democratic and legitimate demands of the Arabic people ".
