Oran (Algeria), Sept 21, 2011 (SPS) - The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia gave Tuesday a humanitarian aid of 206 tons of dates for the benefit of the Saharawi refugees, the Saharawi Embassy in Algeria reported.
The caravan, which is supervised by the World Food Programme Representation in Algeria in coordination with the Algerian and Saharawi Red Crescent, has set up from the port of Oran in the presence of the Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Algeria, Dr. Sami bin Abdullah Al-Saleh, and a representative of the Saudi Ministry of Finance.
The Saudi Ambassador said “this gift falls within the programme of humanitarian aids provided by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in order to contribute to meet the food needs of the groups that are in need.”
He added that his country “is keen to develop such aids with coordination with the United Nations World Food Programme.”
From his part, Mr. Osama Osman, director of World Food Program (WFP) office in Algeria, noted that this assistance “falls also within the frameworks of two-year programme until April 2012,” appreciating the international contributions to success the Programme as in the case of Saudi Arabia and countries from Europe, America and others.
“It will also initiate a new programme to begin with the month of May 2012 and will extend until 2014,” confirmed the WFP official. (SPS)
