Algiers Conference demand international intervention to guarantee the respect for human rights in occupied Western Sahara (final statement

Algiers, Oct 31, 2011 (SPS) - The participants of the 2nd International Conference on the Peoples’ Right to Resistance: case of the Saharawi people, held from Oct 29 to 30 in Algiers, have demanded the intervention of the international community to guaranteeing the respect for human rights in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, according the Conference final declaration.

The statement called on the United Nations, European Union, African Union, international NGOs and all human rights activists throughout the world to ensure, as soon as possible and by all means, the respect for human rights in occupied Western Sahara.

It also demanded the immediate release of all the Saharawi prisoners, urging the president and government of France to take a position consistent with France reputation, which is known for its defending of human rights, by allowing the extension of MINURSO mandate to include the protection of human rights in the Saharawi occupied territories.

The participants denounced the looting of Western Sahara natural resources by Morocco in flagrant contradiction with the UN resolution on the permanent authorization of peoples over their natural resources.

They denounced the media blackout imposed by Morocco and their supporters from Europe over the Territory, reaffirming on the legitimacy of the peaceful Saharawi resistance in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, and calling on the Saharawis to continue struggling for their freedom and dignity.

The Conference condemned the recent terrorist attack targeting the Saharawi refugee camps on Oct 22, 2011 and called for an immediate liberation of the three European hostages as to express solidarity with the Saharawi refugees.

It also praised the firm political position of Algeria and its President Mr. Abdelaziz Bouteflika in supporting the Saharawi people, based on noble and inalienable principles and on the international legitimacy.

It therefore appealed to the United Nations agencies and international community to provide an adequate humanitarian assistance for the Saharawi refugees.

The Conference was organized in the period between October 29-30, 2011 by the Algerian National Committee of Solidarity with the Sahrawi People (CNASPS) in collaboration with Embassy of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic in Algeria under the theme: “the peoples’ right to resistance: case of the Saharawi people”

The Conference was attended by more than parliamentarians, politicians, heads of international organizations and institutions, professors, jurists, media experts and representatives of civil international society associations and NGOs from Britain, Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland, Greece, Holland, Germany, Russia, France, Austria, Italy, Spain, Algeria, Sahrawi Republic, Ghana, Tanzania, South Africa, Mauritania, Tunisia, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Senegal, United States, Argentina, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Australia, Brazil, Lebanon, Cuba and Venezuela.

It was also attended by high-level Saharawi political delegation led by the President of the Republic and Secretary General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz. (SPS)
