Chiclana (Cádiz), Nov 14, 2011 - The Member of the European Parliament from the United Left, Mr. Willy Meyer, has asked the other Spanish political forces that are heading to the Nov 20 general elections to take positions on the international policy, especially showing their approaches in respect to the process of decolonization and self-determination of Western Sahara, according to the newspaper “Bahía de Cádiz”.
“The traditional position of the Government on this issue is far from the position of the Spanish society, which has always shown great solidarity with the Saharawi people,” said Mr. Meyer in a meeting held Thursday in Chiclana with representatives of various groups working in the field of international cooperation.
The European Deputy expressed the clear position of his political formation on Western Sahara cause, saying “we must respect the international law and we must stand with the Saharawi people to exercise their right to self-determination.”
He indicated in this sense that the civil society in Spain has “a huge solidarity with the Saharawi people,” underlying that there is a huge gap between what the Spanish civil society thinks and act and how governments act.
The situation experienced by the Saharawi people and the latest developments in the process of self-determination were the themes of this gathering which comes shortly after the attack on Willy Meyer by the Moroccan police in his recent attempt to visit the occupied territories of Western Sahara.
It should be recalled Mr. Willy Meyer, member of the European Parliament and vice-president of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the European Parliament, has been violently attacked by members of the Moroccan security on October 30, 2011 when he stepped off a plane in the occupied El Aaiun, capital of Western Sahara, in the aim to investigate in the human rights abuses perpetuated by Morocco in the Territory.
