Seville (Spain), Feb 5, 2012 (SPS) - Participants at the 37th European Coordination Conference of Support to the Sahrawi Saharawi People (EUCOCO) emphasized Sunday, in its final communiqué, on priority to take action towards the UN and European Union (EU) in order to assert the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination.
The communiqué, which was read by the Polisario Representative to the EU Mr. Mohamed Sidati, indicated that there are some action items emerged from the reports of working groups, especially, the political action to be taken towards the UN and EU, and the other one being intimately related to support the legitimate rights of Saharawi people.
Among these priorities, the resolution cited, also, the need to establish new alliances within the solidarity movement for an intercontinental mobilization both in Africa, African Union or Latin America.
The participants also pointed out to the priority “to readjust the politics of communication both within the EUCOCO vis-à-vis the interlocutors in the institutions and to the media.
Regarding the workshop of human rights, the resolution emphasized on the testimonies of defenders of human rights coming from occupied territories, announcing the adoption of an action plan for the year 2012.
Thus, the plan calls for the intensification of the campaign for the release of all Saharawi political prisoners and the campaign for the protection and preservation of natural resources of Western Sahara.
Action is also planned, according to this resolution, in the direction of the UN Council of Human Rights in Geneva, the Commission on Human Rights, peoples of the African Union and Council of Europe.
On other hand, it called for increasing the number of observers and civilian missions as well as sending lawyers to the Saharawi occupied territories.
Regarding the workshop dedicated to solidarity, the resolution highlighted the particular need to involve social movements within the campaigns of mobilization in order to respect all human, social and cultural rights of the Saharawi people.”
With regard to the workshop dedicated to the issues related to cooperation, the resolution highlighted the need for achieving self-sufficiency in food for the Saharawis, and announced a strategic plan for the future by defining the priority needs.”
The 600 participants from 20 countries hailed, through this resolution, the important contribution of Algeria, the host country of the Sahrawi refugees in supporting their legitimate claims.”
The next edition of EUCOCO will be held in 2013 in Rome (Italy), it was announced at the closing ceremony of its 37th edition that took place on 3, 4, and 5 February in Seville, in the presence of the Saharawi President, Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz. (SPS)
