Aminatou Haidar to visit Sahrawi refugee camps soon

Seville, Feb 7, 2012 (SPS) – The Sahrawi human rights activist, Aminatou Haidar, revealed Tuesday in Seville that she plans to visit the Sahrawi refugee, expressing "full" support to Polisario Front as the sole legitimate representative of the Saharawi people .


In interview with Algeria Press Service (APS), on the sidelines of the 37th EUCOCO conference, Ms. Aminatou Haidar expressed desire to visit Algeria, "neighbor and friend of the Sahrawi struggle for freedom" .


Ms. Haidar refuted lies issued by the Moroccan press doubted on her relationship with the Polisario Front.


"I belong to the Polisario Front" , said Ms. Haidar, stressing "I m a Saharawi citizen and the sole legitimate representative of the Saharawi people is the Polisario Front".

"I m not bothered to say that the sole legitimate representative of the Saharawi people is the Popular Front for the Liberation of Saguia el-Hamra and Río de Oro" she further added.


The Saharawi activist highlighted "dramatic" situation of human rights in occupied territories.


She stated that the occupied territories experienced an increased military deployment, in particular the occupied capital Al Aaiun which is under a tight siege imposed by Moroccan army and security sources.


"Recent months, a grave assaults against minors and students have been committed by Moroccan security forces " said Ms. Haidar.


She underlined that dozens of Saharawi children  have multiple fractures due to violence they suffered. " Children are often subjected to sexual harassment and outright violated in some cases. " Ms. Aminatou Haidar said.


The Saharawi human rights activist condemned those gross violations, calling for extending the MINORSO mandate to include monitoring and protection of human rights in occupied territories. (SPS)
