Assembly of Extremadura approves a motion calling on Madrid to grant diplomatic status for the Polisario Front

Madrid, Feb 11, 2012 (SPS) - The Assembly of Extremadura approved Thursday a motion urging Madrid government to give the diplomatic status for the Frente Polisario, the sole and legitimate representative of the people of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, calling for establishing a diplomatic ties with it, reported the Western Sahara Foundation.

35 voted in favor of the motion, none against and 30 abstentions, according to the same source.

The Foundation described decision of the Regional Parliament as “the historical” in view to the ongoing developments of the Saharawi cause on the diplomatic level.
“Parliament of Extremadura calls on Madrid government to take the step referred to, because Frente Polisario is the legitimate and sole representative of the people of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic,” reads the motion, which was signed in a plenary session.

The vote was attended by the deputy Representative of the Polisario Front in Extremadura, Mr. Alali El Mami, and members of the Western Sahara Foundatio, including José Manuel De la Fuente, Hafedellah Anfari y Rosario García Díaz.

The proposal has been made the United Left Extremadura and backed by the Catalan Parliamentarian, Víctor Cascos.

The Foundation expressed, in the name of its members, full satisfaction and deep thank to the Assembly of Extremadura and all parliamentary group, which directly campaigned for approving the decision.

It also indicated that this decision “confirms the start toward the recognition of the Saharawi state and Saharawis right to freedom and self-determination.” (SPS)
