President of Republic calls on Ban to intervene to protect Saharawi civilians in occupied territories

Bir Lehlou (Liberated Territories), Feb 23, 2012 (SPS) - The President of the Republic and Secretary General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz, called Thursday on the UN Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, to urgently intervene to ensure protection for the Saharawi civilians in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.


In letter to Ki moon following a brutal attack against a peaceful protest in occupied Alauin , President Mohamed Abdelaziz asserted that what happened today  is a repetition of the brutality carried out by Moroccan occupation against the peaceful protest calling for enabling the Saharawis to an opportunity of free and democratic expression through a free, fair and just referendum to practice their legitimate right to self-determination, freedom and independence.


"We call on you to intervene to put an end to this escalating situation, release Yahia Mohamed Hafed and all the Saharawi political detainees , unveil the fate of more than 651 Saharawi disappeared, and to protect the Sahrawi defenseless civilians in occupied territories, southern Morocco and universities from the brutality of Moroccan authorities of occupation ", the President wrote.

Recalling the UN responsibility in the region, President Mohamed argued the organization to accelerate efforts to expand the powers of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara, MINURSO, to include the protection, monitoring and reporting on human rights.


He expressed deep regret that this attack, as others in Gdeim Izizk, Dakhla and  Smara, takes place in region listed by the United Nations as a Non-Self-Governing Territory pending decolonization.


President of Republic criticized the silence of international community before the Moroccan occupation's policy based on of tight siege, repression and looting of natural resources.


It is worth noting that dozens of Saharawi civilians injured today following brutal intervention of Moroccan authorities of occupation against a peaceful sit in organized by families of the Saharawi political prisoners of Gdeim Izik. (SPS)
