Brussels, March 06, 2012 (SPS) -The Polisario Front has urged the European Parliament (EP) to immediately intervene and end the Moroccan repression in the occupied territories of Western Sahara,

"We reiterate the urgent and solemn demand to the European Union, to intervene and help a population at risk due to the Moroccan policy of repression in Western Sahara," wrote Minister Delegate in charge of Europe, Mohamed Sidati in a letter to European Parliament.

Mohamed Sidati called for the "immediate and unconditional release" of 82 Saharawi political prisoners "unfairly" jailed in Moroccan prisons.

Condemning the "deteriorating" human rights situation in occupied Western Sahara, the Saharawi diplomat stressed that "with impunity, Morocco continue its repression against Saharawi defenseless civilians."

"Now, there are more than 82 Saharawi political prisoners in various prisons in Morocco and occupied Western Sahara. Some of these prisoners are serving sentences of 3 to 15 years after unfair trials," said Mohamed Sidati, adding "the 23 Saharawi political prisoners detained following the assault on Gdeim Izik over a year ago, still awaiting trial."
