Arrest and confiscating documents of Saharawi activists at Moroccan checkpoint in occupied El Aaiun

Submitted on

El Aaiun (occupied territories), March 17, 2012 (SPS) - The Moroccan occupation police arrested and confiscated Friday documents of three Saharawi activists of human rights at a Moroccan security checkpoint at the eastern entrance of occupied El Aaiun, capital of Western Sahara, coming from Al-Khat Valley, according to a source of the Ministry of the Occupied Territory and Communities Abroad.

The three are: Mr. Hmad Hamad, vice-chairman of the Committee for the Defense of the Right to Self-determination of the People of Western Sahara (CODAPSO), and the activist and former political prisoner, Husein Andur, and the activist of human rights, Bayay Abdelaziz, according to the same source.

The group was arrested at 16:00 Friday afternoon, exposed to maltreated words aiming to provoking them, so organizers of the security barrier confiscated their documents of identity and refrained to handing them without giving reasons, the source added.

In the same context, CODAPSO condemned such “an unjustified act”, considering it a part of the campaigns of constant harassment on the Saharawi human rights activists, describing it as “shameful act” because it affects freedom of movement of the Saharawi human rights activists.

The Committee therefore called on the Moroccan State to respect human rights, being violated in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, and open a margin of freedoms for the Saharawi citizens and human rights activists. (SPS)
