Aminatou Haidar in Washington and New York to advocate the Saharawi cause

Washington DC, March 29, 2012 (SPS) - The Saharawi human rights defender Aminatou Haidar, is visiting Washington and New York from 26 March to 9 April to plead the case of Western Sahara and denounce violations of human rights of Sahrawis by Morocco.

 


During her stay in Washington, Haidar will meet with members of Congress at the House of Representatives (lower house) and Senate and will also meet with officials from the State Department, she indicated that during a press conference Wednesday in Washington at the Robert F. Kennedy Centre for justice and human rights.

 


In New York, the Sahrawi human rights defender will meet with members of the Security Council and UN Assistant Secretary General of the UN for human rights, before traveling to Massachusetts where she will give a lecture at the Boston University on the Western Sahara issue.

 


Through these meetings, explained Haidar, who hosted a conference Tuesday at George Washington University in the U.S. federal capital, it is to inform the general public, parliamentarians and the U.S. government about the "gross violations of human rights perpetrated by the Moroccan forces against Sahrawi people."
