Moscow, April 21, 2012 (SPS) - “Moscow supports a just and lasting solution to the conflict of Western Sahara respecting right of the Saharawi people to self-determination in compliance with international legitimacy and resolutions of the Security Council,” said Wednesday Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in a meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister.

In a press conference following the meeting, Mr. Lavrov said that Russia “closely follow the conditions relating to Saharawi file and contribute to the support efforts made by the United Nations in order to reach a solution in line with the international legitimacy and UN resolutions,” reaffirming Russia's call to the parties to the conflict, Polisario Front and Morocco, “to negotiate on the basis of the Security Council resolutions, in order to reach the desired solution.”

He also recalled that the Security Council “unanimously approves resolutions regarding the Saharawi issue, and that what translates, in his view, will of the international community to reach a solution stems from the United Nations Settlement Plan ratified by the two parties to the conflict,” expressing his conviction that any progress in this trend “will positively serve the entire Region at all levels.” (SPS)
