UJSARIO elected as vice-president of the International Union of Socialist Youth

Asunción (Paraguay), April 23, 2012 (SPS) - The Saharawi Youth Union (known as UESARIO) elected Sunday as one of vice-president of the International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY), at Congress held from 20-23 April 2012 in Asunción, the capital of Paraguay.

A delegation representing UJSARIO, led by member of National Council and Representative in Diaspora Dr. Brahim Ghali Abdalfatah, took part in the Congress.

The Congress attended by more than 200 delegates from 182 states, where it discusses several issues and challenges facing the youth in the world today including the economic crisis, occupation and violations of the fundamental human rights.

Addressing IUSY Congress, Dr. Brahim Ghali spoke about the developments on the Saharawi question including the gross violations of human rights in occupied Western Sahara, calling on all member organizations to engage in the international campaign to remove the Moroccan wall of shame and to stop looting the natural resources in the occupied part of Western Sahara, and urging the UN Security Council to extend the powers of MINURSO to include human rights monitoring in Western Sahara.

In a statement issued Sunday, the ANC Youth League, former IUSY vice-president, indicated that UESARIO’s occupation of the IUSY Presidium seat will provide a “necessary platform to make the world aware of the plight of the last colony in the world.”

Presidency of IUSY includes 19 deputies distributed according to the four continents: Latin America 4, Europe 7, Asia 3 and Africa 3, in addition to the President and Secretary General.

IUSY was found in 1907 as an international youth non-governmental organization with United Nations Economic and Social Council consultative status. It is the biggest political youth organization in the world represents about 150 member organizations from more than 100 countries.

It works for democracy, human rights, youth policy from the perspective of freedom, solidarity and equality. (SPS)
