Sydney, May 18, 2012 (SPS) - The general congress of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) passed Thursday a motion supporting the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination and independence at its general congress held current May 15-17, informed POLISARIO representation to Australia.
The motion condemned the gross violations of human rights being committed in the occupied territories of Western Sahara by Morocco, urging Moroccan Government to respect human rights and releases all the Saharawi political prisoners without delay.
It appealed to the UN to enlarge the prerogative of its mission in Western Sahara, known as MINURSO, to include human rights and the conduct of the self-determination referendum scheduled for a long time.
ACTU called for supporting right of the Saharawi people to self-determination in line with the relevant UN resolutions on decolonization, pressurize Moroccan Government to cease its abuses to the Saharawi human rights as to provide the humanitarian aid for the Saharawi refugee camps.
It also asked the Australian companies to stop exporting phosphate from occupied Western Sahara, through accords signed with the Moroccan regime.
“The only just, legal and lasting solution to the conflict in Western Sahara, is to end the Moroccan illegal occupation and allow the Saharawi people to exercise their right to self-determination, in accordance with the UN decolonisation doctrine,” stated the motion.
It should be recalled that a Saharawi delegation led by the Secretary General of Saharawi Workers Union and composed of POLISARIO Representative to Australia and Saharawi activist Malak Amidane has took part in the general congress of ACTU. (SPS)
