Association calls on French Government to defend UN resolutions on Western Sahara

Submitted on

Paris, August 4, 2012 (SPS) - The French Association of Friends of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (AARASD) has called on France’s Government, which chaired Security Council current Aug, to defend the United Nations resolutions on Western Sahara, recalling in a statement published last week to the position expressed by France’s Foreign Minister during his recent visit to Algeria.

The Association condemned the recent decision by the Spanish Government to withdraw the Spanish aid workers from the Saharawi refugee camps, recalling “the Saharawi refugees also need humanitarian assistance and international protection while the UN and MINURSO work to organize a referendum on self-determination.”

“Decision of the Spanish Foreign Minister to withdraw aid workers was unjustified, especially as the rest of the aid workers and foreign workers in MINURSO and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) did not affected by the procedure. This raised the grudge of Spanish society and the rest sympathizers with the Saharawi people across the world,” noted the statement.

The Foreign Minister of Spain announced on July 28 the decision to bring home the Spanish aid workers from the Saharawi refugee camps.

A move deplored by the Saharawi Government and many international organizations of human rights. (SPS)
