Shaheed Al Hafed (refugee camps), August 10, 2012 (SPS) - Head of the Liaison Office of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) in Tindouf, the Sudanese Omar Bashir Manis, considered Wednesday that there is no reason for the UN to evacuate its foreign aid workers from the Saharawi refugee camps, during a meeting with Spanish aid workers visiting the Saharawi refugee camps.
“The UN will not evacuate its staff from the Saharawi refugee camps,” underlined Mr. Manis, adding that the UN “sees no lack of security in the Camps that might lead to a decision like withdrawing the aid workers of MINURSO.”
Head of the MINURSO Liaison Office in Tindiuf recognized that the kidnapping of the Spanish aid workers Ainhoa Gonyalons, Enric Fernandez de Rincon and Italian Rossella Urru last October 22 was “a turning point in the camps after many years in which the usual quiet was in the area.”
United Nations has 23 foreign aid workers in camps, working for the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and World Food Programme. (SPS)
