New violations of human rights in the occupied territories of Western Sahara

Submitted on

Paris, August17,2012(SPS) - Further violations of human rights committed in the occupied territories against Sahrawi human rights defenders have been reported by the Association of Friends of SADR (AARASD) which requires once again that the United Nations Mission for the organization Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) has the means to "give them back their voice and their safety.”

In its newsletter for the month of August,AARASD recalls that the 22 Sahrawi activists detained in the military prison of Salé are still awaiting trial or release, saying that their imprisonment is “for several months already illegal as Moroccan justice doesn’t not respect in its penal code on the duration of the detention."

The Paris-based Association expressed "little respectable practices" of the vice-director of the prison in the occupied city of Al-Ayun. "In addition to maintaining the notoriety of the black prison, "the official was guilty of "abuse and threats against the Sahrawi political prisoners," according to AARASD.

It deplores that "to date no response has been provided and especially no investigation was opened" due to the reaction of the families of prisoners who had written again to the Crown Prosecutor in Al-Ayun, to denounce the situation made for their children, their husbands.

The case of Salah Amidan young political prisoner incarcerated in Kenitra and an inscription in which Master Criminal Sciences at the Faculty of economic, legal and social sciences has been refused, the university administration citing his status as a prisoner.(SPS)
