New York, Oct 12, 2012 (SPS) - Deputy Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations, Usman Sarki, said on Thursday that Nigeria will continue to advocate for full independence of Saharawi Republic in accordance with the wishes of the Saharawi people and the tenets of the international law.
Addressing the UN Fourth committee, Usman Sarki regretted that little progress has been fulfilled towards decolonization of Western Sahara since the adoption of the UN General Assembly Resolution 34/37 of 1979.
“we note with regret that hat since the since the adoption Assembly Resolution 34/37 of 1979, which recognized the rights of people of Western Sahara to self-determination and independence after the conclusion of the relevant referendum, little progress has been made towards fulfillment of the creation of free, democratic and independent state part of our continent “ he said.
In this regard, Deputy Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations underlined that "the process that has been laid down in the above resolution should be respected and fully implemented".
“We recognized the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic in 1982, and we will continue to advocate for its full independence in accordance with the wishes of the Saharawi people and the tenets of the international law” said Mr. Usman Sarki. (SPS)
