President of the Republicand Secretary General Polisario Front, Mohamed Abdelaziz has met Wednesday at the headquarters of parliament by the Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Eamon Gilmore, said a source close to the presidential delegation.
The meeting discussed latest developments in the Western Sahara issue.
President of Republic stressed the seriousness and sensitivity of the situation, due to the intransigence of the Moroccan government and its continued violations of international law through the occupation of Western Sahara and the gross violations of human rights commited against Saharawi civilians.
"We believe that Ireland and Europe can play a central role in resolving the conflict, either through its contacts with the Moroccan government or the exercise of necessary pressure against it so that it complies with the requirements of international legitimacy and facilitate the organization of a referendum for self-determination of the Saharawi people, under the UN supervision ", said President Mohamed Abdelaziz.
for his part, The Irish Foreign Minister reiterated his country's commitment to support international efforts to enable the Saharawi people to exercise their right to self-determination and to extend the mandate of MINURSO for the protection of human rights, expressing his hope that the forthcoming visit of the personal Envoy of the UN in the region lead to positive results.
Mr. Gilmore also affirmed the willingness of his country in coordination and cooperation with other member countries of the European Union to continue to work to ensure the necessary humanitarian aid to the Sahrawi refugees.
